Follow-up emails after applying and interviewing that get answers
Silence after applying is normal — and fixable. The right follow-up, sent at the right time, restarts stalled applications without burning bridges.
The timing rules
Follow-ups work when they respect the process:
- After applying: one message, 5–7 working days in
- After an interview: thank-you within 24 hours, status check after their stated timeline passes
- After an offer goes quiet: every 3–4 days, maximum twice
- Never more than two follow-ups on the same thread
The follow-up formula
Three sentences: who you are and the role, one line of relevant proof or enthusiasm, one specific question. 'Hi Sara, I applied for the Marketing Analyst role last Tuesday — my experience growing paid acquisition 40% at a similar-stage company maps directly to the goals in the posting. Is there an updated timeline for next steps?'
Find the right person
A message to the hiring manager or recruiter outperforms replying to a no-reply inbox. Search the company page for people with the role's likely manager title, and keep the request light — no attachments beyond your CV, no demands.
When silence is the answer
If two well-spaced follow-ups get nothing, close the loop mentally and redirect the energy. A tracker of company, contact, date and status keeps you from chasing dead applications instead of building new ones.
Put this into practice
Score your CV against a real job description and fix the gaps in minutes.
