How to check if your resume is ATS friendly (step by step)

Why checking matters

Most employers screen applications with an applicant tracking system (ATS) before a person reads them. If the software cannot read your resume, your experience may never reach a recruiter, however strong it is.

The good news: you can check your resume in a few minutes and fix most problems yourself.

Step 1: The copy-paste test

Open your PDF, select all the text and paste it into a plain text editor. If the text comes out jumbled, in the wrong order, or missing, an ATS will struggle too.

• Text should paste in reading order, top to bottom
• Contact details, dates and job titles should all be present
• No words should be split or replaced by strange symbols

Step 2: Check the structure

ATS software looks for familiar section names and a simple layout.

• Use standard headings: Summary, Experience, Education, Skills
• Avoid tables, text boxes and text inside images
• Keep contact details in the main body, not only in the page header
• List jobs newest first with clear start and end dates

Step 3: Compare with the job description
